This week I added two more layers to my painting. First, I added some new brighter colors, then went over most of the canvas with a solid dark grey color - leaving some of the other layers exposed. I do plan on adding a bit more texture, like I already have in the upper left corner of the painting, but just couldn't find my tool today. I am also considering adding a few paper dots, and then will ultimately add more solid grey.

Honestly, I have mixed feelings about this project. I am happy that I did it, but I also think parts of it could have been done much better. I think that I should've gone into this project with the perspective that this book was like a journal and each day I could casually create a collage that represented some concept, but I didn't. Instead I thought more about refining each piece, but ultimately I think this actually led to less refined collages. I was thinking too much about balancing simplicity and complexity, and the relationship of the collage to the concept, which resulted in some pieces that I just don't like very much.
I am happy, however, with how much this project pushed my creativity, Rather than just having to plan and execute one piece, I created around fifteen. For each I had to come up with new ideas and how to use the materials available to represent various concepts, specifically each part of my typical day. In comparison, to the last book I made, although I think I like this one less overall, I do think I did a better job of using materials and choosing higher quality materials. This seemed to help the overall quality of the piece a little. Another thing I struggled with for this piece was making the actual book and cover, The binding went well but some of the pages are uneven and I just don't like the cover very much in general, which I think added some discouragement when I was making the individual collages. For my last book, I was really happy with how the cover and book turned out, so then I was very deliberate in what I was filling that book up with - but this did not happen for this book. Overall, even though are aspects I am not necessarily please with, I am glad I completed this project, Again, I think it pushed my creativity and experimentation, and was overall a good learning experience, I think in the future if I were to make a book again, I would maybe experiment with something other than collage or just try to worry less about each individual page and balancing simplicity or complexity. Simply said, I would try not to overthink. This week I completed the final pages of my boo. Overall, I am happy with the ideas behind these and the overall designs - I think I achieved the balance of simplicity and detail/business I was going for. I do wish these had a bit better craft, which is how I am pretty much feeling about the whole book. I do think I did a good job of thinking about these five pages as "journal entries" or "daily drawings" which helped me to focus on expressing the ideas and my own creativity.
This past week, I added four more collages to my book. I'm happy with how much I was able to get done but don't love all of them. Either way, I think these four add some good variety to the book as a whole.
I really have begun to think of this more as a journal or sketchbook, as I do a collage almost every weekday and focus purely on expressing myself, and less on craft and overall polish. This week I added another whole layer to my painting. It now looks completely different than it did last week, but that was pretty much the point. I wanted some of the colors and textures from the last layer to show through, but just barely, and I think I achieved that. Next, I plan on adding some green and some tiny little paper circles. Eventually I will cover up a lot of this as well, with more painting, trying to keep the areas of this layer that I really like visible.
Throughout this past week I completed 4 collages in my book. For each, I went through my typical process or focusing on a word, in this case a point in my daily routine, writing down more descriptive words that I associate with that word, sketching out a plan, and then creating my collage. I am not too happy with how these specific collages turned out, however I am happy with how much time I put into each and how many I was able to get down. And luckily I have many pages left. This week I added some more layers of paint to my piece. I mainly just did some large color blocking, that will later act as more of a background. I plan on adding many more layers and textures to this piece, so realistically what I did this week will end up being small background details. I also plan on using much brighter colors for some of my other layers and more warm tones.
This week, I first decorated the cover of my book. This involved cutting small circles with my hole puncher, gluing them on, covering part of the cover with white paper, and then over that covering the cover with a prettier paper. Next, I started planning my collages. This time I decided that the book as a whole will represent my daily routine, each page, representing a certain step (a pic of this plan is in the slideshow). Lastly, I completed my first collage, which loosely represents waking up.
