In August, I filled the entire book with collages. My process for this was pretty simple. I would first look at the theme for that page and create a general plan for that collage based on images, patterns, etc. that I associate with that idea. I then would get out a bunch of materials, and get to work, sometimes straying from my original plan for that page. Here is every collage in my book. General Reflection
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed creating this piece, particularly binding the book. I had made books a few times in the past, but this one I was really able to take my time with and in my opinion, that paid off. In regards to the collages, I am not totally satisfied. I feel like the pages could've been a bit more cohesive and refined. One thing that definitely held me back was supplies. I generally had access to lower quality materials, which I would say impacted the quality of this piece. I think I would like to continue with similar content in the future, telling a story through abstraction, but perhaps would branch out with my collages.

In July, I actually started my project by making the book for the collages. In order to do this I first cut 12 pieces of paper, all the same size. Next, I folded each piece of paper in half. Then, I separated the paper into 3 groups, placing folded pieces inside of each other. Then, I stacked the three groups of paper, and marked where I was going to poke holes that would letter help me to bind the book. After that, I actually poked the holes. Next, I used embroidery thread to basically sew the books together, following a very simple binding pattern. Once, I completed this I had book, but without a cover. In order to create a cover for the front and back of the book, I cut two pieces of cardboard, covered each in white paper, and then each in hand made paper. I decided to leave the spine of the book exposed. Here is how the book came out once I attached the front and back covers.
In June, I began to think about what I wanted to do for my summer project. I went through many ideas, some involving elements from past work and some being completely new. I ultimately decided on more of a two part project, that has both elements that were familiar and new to me. Once I settled on an idea, I began planning out the specifics. I was going to bind my own book, make a cover for the front and the back, and then create a collage on each page of the book. I knew I didn't want these collages to just be random, and I also knew that I really wanted to play around with the idea of story telling. So, I decided I would choose a book that was meaningful to me and tell that story through abstract collages. I decided on a children's book, Babushka's Doll by Patricia Polacco. I went through each page of the book, and wrote down the general theme or feeling specific to that page or part of the book. I then based each collage off of these themes and emotions. Here is the list I went off of... From this, I knew my book would have to be at least 22 pages.
