This week, I have actually started to construct the back drop and structure of the sculpture. I first planned out where I would drill the different holes to place the dowels. Then, I drilled the 5 holes on each side. Then, I went ahead and tried placing one of the dowels, just to make sure I've got the process down. This required drilling a pilot hole in the dowel, putting a screw through the board, and attaching the dowel. Next, I plan on adding the rest of the dowels, spray painting the wood black, soldering the birds, suspending them between the dowels with fishing wire or another clear string, and add the collage elements.

I chose Michael Murphy due to his use of layering and hanging in his sculptures. His work is actually what inspired me to change the path of my sculpture, I know am suspending the wire birds with clear string between wooden dowels. I hope to be able to take inspiration from Murphy's precision and impressive craftsmanship while hanging the different layers. Michael Murphy currently liven in Brooklyn, New York, working as a sculptor. He attended both Kent State University, and the Art Institute of Chicago. He focuses a lot of using optical illusions and space to engage the viewers and get a specific point across. The precision of these pieces make his works appear practically perfect at a specific angle, these are known as anamorphic sculptures. Murphy became well known during the presidential elections of 2008, making political work, such as the Obama pieces shown above. There have been some changes in my plan since last week. I am keeping the general idea but making a few alterations. I now plan on having a wooden base that hangs on the wall with wooden dowels coming out, with different sizes of bird outlines attached. This will give the same three dimensional effect but will hopefully just look a little cleaner. I also changed the shape of the bird outline a little because I felt like the previous wasn't exactly proportional. I already like the new one so much better. I still plan on hanging the tissue paper and other scraps from the wire. I still need to decide if I'm going to paint the dowels and background. Here is the new bird outline. My next step will be making more of these, varying in size.
